Q:
I have herpes of the mouth, and I just got over an outbreak on my lip last week, but now I have two sores on the roof of my mouth. At first they hurt so I thought they were just cuts from eating chips, but now they itch like crazy but hurt really bad when I itch them. Could this be another outbreak of herpes, or something else?
A:
This is more likely canker sores (or aphthous ulcers) which are sores that develop on the soft tissues inside the mouth when you are stressed or your immune system is fighting another infection. They typically resolve within a week, are usually not connected to the herpes virus (except that you recently had an outbreak) and can be managed with "Cank-Aid" which is an over the counter numbing medicine. There are also prescription pastes that can help reduce symptoms.
