Q:
I have a small cut on my finger from taking out the garbage. This happened a week ago and I have no idea what I cut myself on. It looks like the cut itself is finally starting to heal but the surrounding area is a little red and very swollen and tender to the touch. Should I be seen by a doctor for possible infection?
A:
Soaking in really warm water can often prevent the need for antibiotics but if the redness and swelling is persisting or spreading, it needs to be seen and treated. You also need to have your tetanus status checked--if it has been over five years since your last tetanus booster, you should have another shot.
