Q:
For my whole life every few months my heart beats really hard, and I get really warm and that is. Recently in the past three days that really hard beat has been happening every few hours. Just one really hard beat. It isn't painful or anything. I just was wondering if it is a serious problem.
A:
It is not unusual to get an occasional "hard" beat that is noticeable, without any other symptoms. These are called "palpitations" and can happen in healthy people when overly fatigued, stressed or with too much alcohol or caffeine. It is an early (premature) ventricular beat with a pause afterward so is a different feeling than typical heart beats. If it is happening frequently, as you describe, it makes sense to be evaluated to make sure you don't have a metabolic imbalance causing the palpitations, and to see if it can be captured on a EKG (heart tracing). In the mean time, no caffeine or alcohol and you may find it goes away on its own.
