Q:
About two weeks ago I began a diet change wherein I've drastically reduced my sugar intake. I'm also on the pill and almost two weeks into the active pills. I had a normal period two weeks ago, yet I've begun cramping and even bleeding as if I'm beginning my period again. Could the diet change have had some effect on my hormones? Should I be worried?
A:
It is unlikely that the diet change is the cause of the bleeding and cramping. Breakthrough bleeding can occur on birth control pills due to many factors, including stress, airplane travel, and other illness. More concerning would be the potential of pelvic infection (STIs) or pregnancy. If you are feeling unwell, it is best to be evaluated.
