Q:
Last night my eyes stopped focusing, and my vision would dart back and forth instead, making it impossible to read or watch tv. I was also dizzy, even when I closed my eyes, and the combination of the two was making me feel nausea. I went to sleep hoping to "rest" my eyes, but to a somewhat lesser degree they're still darting back and forth this morning. What might be causing this? Is it serious enough to make an appointment? And if I do, does that initial appointment cost money (I'm currently uninsured)?
A:
It sounds as if you are experiencing nystagmus which can occur with inner ear dizziness--labyrinthitis or vertigo--often viral caused. There are some medications that can ease the symptoms, which are usually temporary for a few days, rarely it can last longer, but the medicines are often sedating.
If you are an enrolled WWU student who has paid the Health Center fee as part of your student fees for spring quarter, there is no charge for the clinic visit, only if we do testing or prescribe medication.
