Q:
Hey Doc, I've been dating my girlfriend for 8 months and we try to be physical and we talked and both know we are ready. The only problem is that I have a short fuse and all I want to do is make her happy. Is there anything I can do to last longer, maybe even train myself to last longer? Anything helps thank you.
A:
Premature ejaculation is defined as ejaculation within a minute of penetration. Typical time between penetration and ejaculation is about five minutes. Please realize this is a common problem for young men starting a sexual relationship, as there is sometimes a sense of urgency because of the situation, or the pressure of performance will cause stress that results in faster orgasm. It has become even more of an issue as sexual partners compare themselves to widely available porn film actors who appear to be able to delay ejaculation forever. That is not the norm, or even near the norm.
There are certainly some ways to work on prevention of premature ejaculation (such as the squeeze technique) but most couples find that having the guy masturbate or being stimulated by his partner to orgasm an hour or so before intercourse helps to slow the ejaculatory response with penetration. It also helps to back off intercourse and concentrate on sexual contact that is non-penetration, with the goal to learn about your partner's preferences and desires. Many women prefer to orgasm without penile penetration, taking off the pressure for the guy to "last".
