Q:
I have a dime-sized blister on the back of my heel, and the skin rubbed off. Now the blister is painful and I am wondering if I can speed the healing. It is making fluid still, is that bad? should I cover it or let it breathe? I am a dancer, so is there a way to wrap it so I can wear shoes comfortably?
A:
It is like a burn that is trying to grow back a skin covering so you do need to protect it from being rubbed until the skin is fully restored, usually 7-10 days depending on the depth of the injury. If it is not oozing thick yellow pus, just clear liquid, then it is not infected. You can keep a bandaid over it, with Neosporin cream or ointment (over the counter) to decrease the risk of infection, and then put mole skin over the back of your heel to cushion it from further injury.
You may have to hold off on dancing until it is fully healed if your shoes rub on it, but once you start back, use mole skin initially to prevent reinjury.
