Q:
Hello I just have a quick question. I am currently on Junel Fe birth control and have only three placebo pills left, but my period has not started. I have been taking the pills everyday. My boyfriend has not come inside me. I had my last period just fine. Should I be worried? If not, what point is it ok to start to worry?
A:
The chances of being pregnant are very low if you are taking your pills consistently, have not been on antibiotics or other medications that interfere with hormonal absorption.
It is wise to do a urine pregnancy test if it would help you worry less as anxiety itself can interfere with your periods.
With low dose pills, it is common to have little or no menstrual blood flow because of the thin endometrial lining. If you are not having a period after three cycles of pills, then talk with your prescribing provider about whether or not to consider a different hormonal dosage/combination.
