I've dealt with bouts of severe insomnia since highschool. It's cyclical and sometimes my sleep schedule has gotten so out of whack that I only manage to get a few hours of sleep a week. I've discussed it with doctors and a counsellor a little and tried every sleep tip I can find... melatonin helped for a little while but stopped being effective after a couple months. Now I take benadril occasionally but I'm worried about becoming dependent on it. I'm currently uninsured so prescription sleep aids aren't an option.
Do you know of any sustainable solutions to this kind of sleeplessness? Does the health center have a sleep specialist? Insomnia really takes a toll on my mental and physical health and I'm so sick of it.
Sleep disturbance is one of the most common problems we see at the health center and there are many reasons for this, including some students who, like yourself, have a long history of insomnia.
We don't have a sleep specialist but we do have psychiatry consultation available here that you might consider. We have safe non-addictive prescription medications that can be useful and there are behavioral techniques that can be beneficial as well.I'd suggest you schedule for a mental health evaluation appointment so you can have a full hour to go over your history with the physician.
