The other day while I was eating an apple, the skin of it cut down into that small piece of muscle tissue under my tongue. Ever since it happened I have been having some problems swallowing and extending my tongue out. It hurts all day long and the piece of tissue under my tongue looks like it's getting shorter, will it heal on its own and go back to normal or do I need to see a doctor?
You are talking about the frenulum which is the thin tissue connection between the base of the tongue and the bottom of the mouth. What you are experiencing is not unusual and it can take 10-14 days to heal completely. In the meantime tongue movement is painful and restricted because of pain. It should heal without any intervention but if it is continuing to restrict your tongue movement beyond two weeks, it would be an Ear, Nose Throat specialist who would be consulted. We can assist you with a referral if needed.
