I'm wondering if I have the flu. For the past two days I have had the common cold (stuffy nose, cough, sore throat). Suddenly I woke up in the middle of the night with an overwhelming feeling of nausea. I've had watery stool since then along with chills.
I've been trying hard to drink lots of liquids. While I had my cold I drank a lot of tea and water. My appetite had been normal as well until the sudden nausea hit.
Currently I have a mild case of diarrhea and my cold symptoms are still around. Is this just the flu? I have not been sick in a long time so I don't know if this is normal or not.
The "flu" or influenza, is a different set of symptoms of sudden onset of muscle aches, chills, sore throat, dry cough and health with high fever. It can have gastrointestinal symptoms but not often.
You are describing either two different illnesses or a virus that is somehow affecting both your respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. If you have no fever, no abdominal pain, and your sore throat and cough are improving, then concentrate on a restricted diet (BRAT diet is easy to remember --Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast along with clear liquids only, no dairy products) until your stools and appetite are back to normal.
If you are still feeling significantly ill today, you are welcome to be seen for a same day appointment so we can assess your symptoms. Call 650-3400 and you can talk with a consulting nurse.
