A few months ago I had a gastrointestinal infection that caused me to have diarrhea for about 5 days. On the first night I had it, I woke up with my stomach swelling and an overwhelming nauseous feeling. That is when the diarrhea began. Since then, maybe once or twice a month, I've been having bouts of diarrhea where my stool is almost yellow-colored an very soft. That usually lasts about 3 days. I'm wondering if it is likely that my appendix could have been affected from all of this. I know that it is part of the digestive tract, and I'm wondering if when my stomach started swelling that first night if maybe some of that could have gotten into my appendix. I also had the stomach flu a year ago that caused my stomach to swell and me to vomit a lot. Should I have my appendix checked out or am I worrying too much?
It would be extremely rare for ongoing stomach symptoms to be caused by the appendix which typically becomes acutely inflamed, infected and has symptoms that don't go away. Chronic appendicitis can happen but your symptoms sound more like irritable bowel or possibly a bowel infection that has not resolved.
It would be important to see a clinician, providing the best history you can about the timeline of your symptoms over the past year or so, whether there is any connection to certain foods or activities, whether you have a history of foreign travel or other potential parasitic exposures, and whether there is family history of colon/stomach problems. Then physical examination, lab work, possibly a change in diet, and considering whether a gastroenterology evaluation is warranted (endoscopy/colonscopy)
If you are a student this summer, please come to clinic to get started on sorting out the mystery.
