I was wondering if it is safe to use a Diva Cup (or other menstrual cup) with an IUD. I've read mixed reviews online and was hoping for a more reliable source of information. Thanks!
Good question..(it made us do research too!) A very reliable website concerning contraceptive questions is "www.managingcontraception.com" .
The main concern about Diva Cup use in combination with IUDs appears to be that when the cup is removed, the IUD may somehow be dislodged. This would most likely occur if the string from the IUD was somehow pulled at the same time the cup is pulled, or that the suction at the time of the removal of the cup was sufficient to dislodge the IUD.
Both of these scenarios are unlikely. The IUD string is very short (usually it takes an effort to reach in far enough to touch it) and the Diva Cup is worn near the bottom of the vagina, fairly far away from the cervix (where the string is located), so that seems unlikely that this could happen. To prevent this, it may help to ask the person that places the IUD to be sure the string is not too long, or if it is already placed, ask at your next pelvic exam how long it is. If it seems long enough to get tangled, or accidentally pulled, it can be cut shorter.
One website suggested that when removing the Diva Cup, if it seems that there is strong suction keeping it in place, put a finger around the rim to break the suction before pulling it out. This could be a safeguard too.
Dr Robert Hatcher is a well respected national authority on contraceptive use, and on the website noted above, he stated that he knew of no reason not to use a Diva Cup when also using an IUD. He did caution to be sure to clean the cup daily and empty it several times a day.
I hope this helps!
