Hi, I have had a sore throat now for two days. It is pretty severe and I was worried that it might be strep. However I also have a stuffy nose and when I look in my throat I can't really spot any white spots. I have no fever but my neck has been sore. I was wondering if I should come in to get a test on it or if it is definitely not strep throat?
The risk of strep is higher if you have swollen tonsils with exudate (white patches) with fever, and no congestion or cough. Here is a good tool to use to determine your risk http://www.mdcalc.com/modified-centor-score-for-strep-pharyngitis/
unfortunately, we can never say the risk of having group A strep is zero as there are atypical infections we see frequently.
A triage nurse can run the rapid strep test for you if you are concerned.
