Q:

I am a 21 year old student and I believe that I may have ADD. I have trouble remembering things people say to me most of the time. I can remember visual images almost precisely. I have trouble keeping my mind from wandering during class and especially tests. I cannot focus on one thing unless it is completely visual; i.e. video games, movies or lectures that interest me. I commonly begin on one task at home, then get distracted and completely forget about the first task and move on to something else.

It is frustrating and it is becoming a detriment to my jobs and my classwork. I don't necessarily want to be medicated for ADD if I am diagnosable; but are there any methods to help myself focus on what I need to be doing?

A:

Thank you for your query regarding ADD.

ADD or ADHD certainly affects focus and attention. ADD is thought to be mostly problems with attention while ADHD is considered to be hyperactive and/or impulsive. There are also people who have both - the combined type. From you're description, it sounds as though you are having concerns regarding attention. Another diagnostic point regarding ADD/ADHD is that a person has problems in several areas, e.g.. home, work, and school. You mentioned that this was true for you, as well. Another major feature of ADD/ADHD is that it has been present from an early age. Sometimes this is real obvious, other times it is not. The diagnosis of ADD/ADHD can only be made after gathering all of the important information, including early developmental history, report cards if possible, an interview and symptom and behavioral check lists. If you would like to pursue this, you can certainly schedule an appointment at the Student Health Center with Dr. Sara Cuene.

It also is possible to have attention problems for other reasons and these should be explored, especially if they are causing difficulties, and it does not appear to be ADD.

Another issue you raised was learning best by visual presentation. People do have varied ways of learning and it can be important to be aware of you're style.

I hope this has been helpful, and schedule an appointment if you wish.
