Q:

Is there any LEGAL and EASY TO FIND alternative REQUIRING NO PRESCRIPTION at all that can act like the standard 30mgs of Adderall (amphetamine salts) does on ADD and amotivational disorder type problems- mostly dopamine related? I found already that the typical caffeine, ephedrine/pseudo-ephedrine, ginseng/gota kola stimulants only manage to overdrive the noradrenalin too much or at least feel that way causing all kinds of terrible side effects (inefficient bowel, nausea, extreme appetite suppression, "amping" twitches, insomnia, agitation, UTTERLY no concentration or motivation/incentive, tolerance, withdrawals- all 10 times worse than 30mgs of Adderall) with absolutely no improvement (mostly marijuana equivalent intoxication/reductions instead) in concentration, motivation, alertness and awareness, feeling of intelligence/confidence, and incentive. Those nearly worthless substances take it all away- only plus to them is the synthetic pot-like feeling euphoria, but that just annoys me worse than ever now. Lower doses of the like do nothing at all, well other than more subtle versions of the BAD side effects of high doses. Side effects get far too severe to push them far enough to increase dopamine worth anything- not that it would matter. Doesn't anything do it like the tried and true schedule II drug used at typical ADD/ADHD doses? I heard that the herbal MAOI yohombe or l-phenylalanine can affect dopamine equal to the serotonin and noradrenalin, however, there is no information regarding how they compare in dopamine concentrations (or ratio for dopamine vs. noradrenalin and serotonin) following a given dose compared to Adderall. All anyone talks about in yohimbe is its aphrodisiac effect, which I couldn't care less about! My doctor and parents are wrong in that they think I need huge amounts of SSRI, which I KNOW is wrong, I need dopamine much more for my ADD symptoms and the SSRI doesn't exactly help. I don't want to take a lot of the SSRI, I want to start working at a normal level again without the stress, difficulty, or risk of dealing with the hard-to-get illegal drug that works the way it should (I've never "abused" it or got "cranked"- well caffeine and ephedrine did that every time!). Please reply, I could use any legitimate advice.

This is not a simple question to answer in a forum like this. All the over the counter herbal/neutriceutical medications you've listed have no double-blinded proven benefit for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and as you've discovered, can make things very much worse, cause intense and potentially life-threatening side effects, and should not be combined with each other, recreational drugs or prescription drugs.

Medications that improve serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine have all been found to have some benefit in the symptoms of ADHD, but different drugs work differently for different people.

It is not clear what you have not liked about Adderall, but if you are looking for a new proven medication for ADHD treatment, that is non-amphetamine based, the new prescription drug "Strattera" is being released by Eli Lilly next month and has some encouraging data backing it. There are many ADHD diagnosed patients who prefer not to take amphetamines long-term, or can't, due to side effects. The hope is this new medication may be as effective without all the hassles and risks of the amphetamine drug class.
