Q:

I have been smoking since high school. This New Years I decided to quit. I am having trouble doing it "cold turkey." What can I do? Does the patch really work? Where can I get some? What about strategies to keep my mind off smoking? Thanks.

A:

Many different smoking cessation techniques are available, and all have about a 30% success rate. Some work better than others for different individuals. If you feel you are nicotine addicted (have withdrawal symptoms when you don't smoke) then the nicotine taper using the patch or gum is the best technique for you. They are available in different dosages over the counter. The other very helpful medication (prescription) is Zyban (bupropion) which helps to reduce cravings and also makes cigarettes taste awful for some people. We have free samples in our clinic for those who are interested in starting.
