Q:

I have sprained my ankle in the past. Is there anything I can do to help prevent re-injury?

A:

Absolutely!  When you sprain your ankle the nerves to the ankle, and the soft tissues around the ankle, are injured so they no longer support the ankle properly or send the proper "messages" back to the nervous system to allow well-coordinated function to be resumed.  Over time, much of this function will return, but it will return more reliably and more quickly with a program of rehabilitation exercises.  Such a program can be learned quite easily and then performed at home until rehabilitation is complete.

The other helpful measure is the use of lace-up ankle braces for activity, such as sports participation, where there is increased risk of ankle injury.

Instruction in rehabilitation can be obtained through a provider at the Student Health Center, and I would suggest that you consult one of them.  Ankle braces can also be fitted and issued there.
