Asthma (small airway or bronchial tube spasm) can be
anything from a distinct audible "wheezing" when breathing, to a feeling of
shortness of breath with exertion, to chest pressure, to unexplained fatigue
and lack of stamina, to a cough that doesn't go away.
It is diagnosed through a history, good physical examination
and spirometry--measuring the force of expiration, which can determine if
there is bronchial tube spasm that is detectable.
Exercise-induced asthma happens with exertion only, when
breathing becomes deeper and faster, or particularly when aggravated by cold
air.
Asthma is a very treatable condition and does not have to
limit activity if managed well. If you think you may have asthma symptoms,
come in for evaluation.
