Q:

I recently asked a question about taking medication for depression and wondering if I could take one drug that would help with depression and ADD. The response was helpful but I do have a follow up. It is my understanding that ADD and ADHD commonly require different drugs. I do not have a hyperactivity disorder, I only have attention deficit disorder. Does this make a difference?

A:

It is not necessarily the case that ADD and ADHD require different medication approaches--the same meds (stimulants, SSRIs, etc.) are successfully used for both but as in all things, individual patients respond differently to different meds, and a medication trial is always necessary to determine if there is benefit or not.
