Q:

When I go running I tend to sweat a lot, which results in a very discomforting feeling in my genetalia region. I have heard it described as "ass rash." Is there anything I can do about this?

A:

This is often a difficult problem. And it may be complicated by other factors, including underlying fungal infection ("jock itch").

Many runners find that wearing spandex-type shorts which cut down on friction helps. Talcum powder used liberally can help. There are medications that can be used to decrease sweating in certain locations: usually this is in the armpits, but might be applicable to the groin as well. Skin lubricants are often recommended, but I'm not particularly enthusiastic about them.

My best advice is to talk it over with a knowledgeable sports medicine physician, who can evaluate to see whether there are complicating factors that need treatment, and then help you to find a way to minimize the problem.
