Q:

I have been prescribed Lithium due to cyclical mood issues, and I just cant take the stuff. I feel sluggish and ill whenever my doses are increased. I know that I should be taking something, but are there any alternatives to the Lithium or some other drug that is going to ruin my life even more than the depression?

A:

There are quite a number of alternative mood stabilizers, some of which are easier to take than Lithium for some people, though Lithium is still the first line choice for most. We routinely use Depakote, Tegretol, Geodon, Zyprexa, Lamictal, Risperidal, Topamax, and Seroquel. Please make an appointment with your mental health care provider to come in and evaluate which might make the most sense for you.
