When you exercise specific muscle groups are you actually burning the fat in that area or are you just burning general calories? For example: If I do crunches, I know I am working my abdominal muscles but am I actually burning the fat on my stomach?

 

A:

Generally, you cannot "spot reduce" by exercising specific body regions. However, in times of calorie deficit some areas of fat deposition tend to lose fat more "visibly" than others do, so there may be the appearance of spot reduction, for instance, about the waist.
