Q:

I have a friend suffering from depression and I would like to help him, but I am unsure how to go about it. He used to be on anti-depressants, and I think he should be again, but I don't know how to bring it up. Is there any advice you could give me about how to help him?

A:

The best way to bring up your concern is to be direct and express your concern about his well-being. Perhaps you want to talk with him about a family member or acquaintance who has struggled with recurrent depression as an opening, but let him know you are aware of his current struggle and you'd like to know how you can support him and encourage him to seek help. He can come either to the Health Center or Counseling Center as a first stop.
