Q:

I am 5 ft 3 inches tall and am slightly overweight. My normal weight is around 125, but I gained 20 pounds since my junior year (I am now a graduating senior). I workout and eat right, but have been unable to drop the extra pounds. I have been thinking about herbal supplements or something along that line, but have heard a lot of bad things about them. Are there any dietary supplements that are safe and effective? Thanks!

A:

The dietary supplements advertised (though not proven in any controlled clinical trials) to help a person lose weight are generally stimulant-based, to decrease appetite, and therefore have the potential side effects and risks of higher blood pressure, heart rate and other cardiovascular effects. We don't recommend them. Most students gain weight because of less physical activity and an abundance of food choices. If you are convinced you are doing well with exercise and diet, it may be wise to have your thyroid level checked to be sure that is not low and contributing to your inability to lose weight.
