Q:

If I want to train for a long distance race, is it better to do long distances or sprints? I am training for a triathlon, and was wondering if when swimming I should go all out on short distances or do long distances in a slower pace. The same question also applies for running and biking.

A:

In general, training should mimic the event one is training for. That having been said, it is also a good idea to vary the training that you do so as to improve general conditioning, and avoid monotony. Interval training (bursts of activity with fixed, timed rest period between) has a long and glorious history in preparation for both anaerobic (short-duration) and aerobic (longer-duration) events.

If you can get some advice from someone who has experience in the events you are contemplating, or a coach who has helped participants in those events, it would probably be of great help.
