Q:

Hi, I have a good friend who has a really bad stress problem. Being so close to finals week, she has really been stressed. Sometimes she even has anxiety attacks. Most of the time she is just fine, but I'm really concerned about her. Is there anything I can do besides just supporting her? Thank you.

A:

Supporting her is very important, so don't discount the positive effect you are having by caring and being concerned.

Anxiety attacks represent stress that has gone beyond normal levels to a level of "overwhelm" and some people are more prone to panic than others. Recommend to your friend that she contact the Counseling Center, 5th floor, Old Main, for help in handling her stress--they have a stress and relaxation group that meets weekly with a therapist, and physicians at the Student Health Center could evaluate her symptoms to see if there may be a medical cause, and potential treatment. There is help for what she is dealing with and thank you for caring about her.
