Q:

Throughout my school career, I've had a really really hard time keeping focused on anything. I had a hard time studying, keeping alert during lectures, writing papers, etc. In high school, everyone I knew with ADD were idiots, they were all a bunch of losers that blamed bad grades on it. I never even thought that I might be in the same situation as those guys, but recently I saw an ad on TV for adult ADD. I saw a lot of what I deal with on that commercial and even took their online test. I don't know what kind of treatments there are available for ADD, but I know I could do a lot better in school and be a lot happier if I could get this thing taken care of. My question is, What is there out there for treatment, how do I go about getting it and how will that affect me in other ways (i.e.: Side effects, etc.)?

A:

It makes sense for you to undergo a formal evaluation for Adult Attention Deficit Disorder, which we do at the Student Health Center at no cost. It is a time consuming process, and is most helpful if you can provide old school records and report cards, as well as history of current academic problems.

We treat ADD with therapy, behavior modification, accommodation and medications. Each individual is assessed and recommendations made based on their own particular situation and symptoms.
