Q:I would really like to lose weight. What would be the best way to go about it. What are the most helpful foods and how often should I exercise and what kind of exercise?
A:This is a huge question with many answers. The best weight loss plan involves no more than 2 lbs. a week as that is a reasonable rate that is more likely to stay off because it doesn't represent a radical change from your current lifestyle. It means at least 600 calories less consumed per day and 400 calories worth spent in increased exercise (or 500/500). Fad diets (Atkins/South Beach etc.) are simply decreased calorie diets in various guises. Try smaller portions, snacks only if low cal, choosing non-fat and skim for all dairy, and it will make a difference. Get started at the Rec Center at least 3-4 days a week doing whatever looks like fun. www.weightwatchers.com is a very rational approach. Good luck! ~The Doc
