Q:

For about 6 years now sometimes when I exercise my heart starts beating really fast and I get really weak and dizzy. It happens very intermittently, but most of the time it happens while I am exercising. I was working out at the rec center and my heart started beating really fast, so I got on a machine that measures your heart rate and it said it was beating at 218 beats per minute. What would be your advice on what it is or if I should get it checked out. Thank you very much.

A:

Yes, you need to have this evaluated as it is potentially a hazard to you--come to the Student Health Center, and we will likely refer you to a cardiologist who will exercise you under supervision to see what may be causing your abnormally high heart rate. It's best to do this soon.
