Q:

I am traveling to Costa Rica in August and was wondering if I need to get any shots prior to my departure and how far in advance I would have to get them.

A:

For travel to Costa Rica, we recommend that you be immunized against hepatitis A and usually typhoid, depending on your length of stay and planned itinerary. It is best to do this at least a month before departure. We offer hepatitis A vaccine injections and oral or injectable typhoid vaccine through our travel clinic. We help you evaluate whether you need special vaccines such as rabies and are up to date on routine vaccines such as tetanus, measles and hepatitis B. For travel to Costa Rica, you may need medication to prevent malaria and/or medication to treat traveler's diarrhea. We write these prescriptions for you if needed.

You can make an appointment in our travel clinic by calling 650-3400. There is an extra charge for this service. You can do your travel consult in Winter or Spring quarter if you will not be a student in the summer. You can learn more about our travel clinic on our website.
