Q:
I feel
sick to my stomach whenever I have to take any type of a test. I have tried
to take a really big test and have failed 3 times all ready. This last time
when I went to take the test, I felt like I was going to pass out at one
point. Is this normal? I study very hard for these tests but I can't seem to
remember all of the things I studied until after the test is over. Can you
help me? I am desperate to pass this one really major test!
A:
You are
describing typical testing anxiety, which is similar to performance or stage
anxiety where a musician or actor forgets their part completely despite
knowing it very well, due to overwhelming anxiety/panic. This is not
uncommon and can be prevented with behavioral techniques of relaxation and
stress management exercises in most cases. Some people benefit from the
prescription of beta blockers, a medication used most often for high blood
pressure which decreases the body's adrenalin response, diminishing symptoms
of rapid heart beat, shaking and stomach upset, without causing sedation.
Lastly, some people have symptoms that are severe enough they need
accommodation for anxiety disorder, which means they can formally request
extended testing time or a quiet testing room separate from their class
through a process outlined by disAbility Resources.
