Q:
At the beginning of last quarter, in January, I got sick
with the same flu that everybody had. I had it for almost a month before
almost all of the symptoms were gone, but the cough that came with it
stayed. It is now almost four months later and I still have a lot of flem
(or mucus) production, and often hack up very productive coughs. I was
wondering if I am still sick from that flu, or if I have some other problem
like allergies, etc... Any suggestions?
A:
It is
most definitely not still the flu. We need to evaluate you to see if there
are environmental factors or other causes for your prolonged cough. We
routinely test for tuberculosis any time a cough lasts longer than 6 weeks,
and usually do a chest xray.
