Q:

I've heard that a rare fungus from Canada has spread to Whatcom county. I'm sick with a cold right now but what if I do have the fungus, what symptoms should I look for? Thanks!

A:

There is no reason to suspect the Cryptococcus gattii fungus unless your symptoms are atypically severe or prolonged compared to a viral upper respiratory infection lasting usually 7-10 days.

Here are the symptoms Cryptococcus Gattii:

British Columbia public health officials say most area residents will be exposed to Cryptococcus gattii during their lifetimes but won't get sick. And those who do get sick can come down with symptoms months after they're exposed. Symptoms include: Prolonged cough lasting weeks or months. Sharp chest pain. Unexplained shortness of breath. Severe headache. Fever. Night sweats. Weight loss. Whatcom County Public Health Officer Greg Stern said people who are very ill with these symptoms should see a doctor. He points out such symptoms might be caused by a more common illness, such as tuberculosis.
