Q:

Just a question.

I'm on nuvaring. Have been for nearly a year. I use it exactly as directed. Last month my period was much shorter and a bit lighter than usual. (I went in to have a pregnancy test done and it came back negative. I've also been testing about every week this month and everything's been negative.) I'm due for my period in a few days and was wondering if this next one is going to be lighter or absent since the last one was lighter? I have not had sex this month and have not been in contact with pre-ejaculatory or ejaculatory fluids.

It is not unusual to have very light menses or no menses on low hormonal contraception and it can cause some anxiety but your risk of pregnancy is no higher because of this. You may want to talk with your health care provider to discuss whether you would do better on a different dosage (though that would take away the convenience of the nuvaring). Otherwise, if you are consistent in your use, you have a very low risk of being pregnant.
