There is
not a straight forward answer to this but amphetamines do have dependency
potential in anyone who takes them regularly, which means over time the same
dose isn't as effective due to tolerance to the medication, so increasing
doses are needed for the same effect. Going without the medication causes
withdrawal symptoms (in the case of amphetamines they are fatigue, malaise,
lethargy, sedation, and irritability) and increased cravings for the drug.
The desire for the feeling the drug produces results in impulsive judgment
about spending time and money trying to get the drug and making poor
decisions as a result.
Many
people on ADHD prescriptions (amphetamines) don't experience these symptoms
while others seek out these medications to get high, not just to get
focused. There are likely different neurochemical make ups that result in
different brain responses to the stimulants.
If you
are concerned about how you are responding to a medication prescribed to
you, please talk with your prescribing clinician.
