Q:

Doc,

I'm 20 yrs old 5'4" and as far as I know I weigh about 108 lbs. I've been a small person my whole life. The women in my family are "small boned." My weight fluctuates between 108 and 112. But recently I feel more skeletal than normal. I can see all of my ribs, my backbone, etc. Due to work and school I haven't been eating too many solid meals, they're more sporadic. I know I'm eating less. Most of the time I just don't have many things to eat in my house. I don't really like how I look or feel. Consistently being told that one is too skinny is really hard on a woman's self confidence, and I'm extremely tired of other's thinking that it's okay to poke fun or make comments about an underweight female when it's not okay to do the same to an overweight one. What's the difference. It still affects my image of myself, it's degrading, it's personal, it's not fair. Now, I'm really tired of seeing myself this weight as well. I want to feel healthy. I would like to gain weight in a healthy way and I need help doing that. I think I need help creating a meal plan for my busy lifestyle and perhaps a workout plan that can help me feel good about myself, and I don't know whether to talk to a counselor, nutritionist, doctor, or all three. Your thoughts?

A good place to start is with a dietician and you do have free access to Jill Kelly who works both in the Student Health Center and the Rec Center. You can call 650-3400 to set up an appointment with her.
