If you
are certain that you have not had any risky intercourse (condom slippage or
breakage), you should insert the NuvaRing as soon as it is available. Just
be sure to use condoms for the week following, at a minimum. If you are
concerned about risk of pregnancy, then you should abstain from intercourse
for 10 days and take a pregnancy test, prior to inserting the Ring.
The
challenges with stopping and restarting a hormonal birth control method
after a lapse, is that you might ovulate earlier (and be more fertile
sooner) after stopping, and you might thus have interrupted or breakthrough
bleeding. Light, brief breakthrough bleeding is not abnormal in these
circumstances.
