The goal of the Campus Community Coalitionfs enforcement effort is to increase the enforcement of underage drinking laws and the publicity of enforcement in Bellingham. Through the Coalitionfs Enforcement Work Group, the Bellingham Police Department, WWU Police Department, Washington State Liquor Control Board, Bellingham City Attorneyfs Office, Whatcom County Sherifffs Office, and WWUfs Office of Student Affairs work together to coordinate their enforcement efforts. The Coalition also works to educate WWU students about community norms and expectations regarding underage drinking and loud parties and how to use alcohol safely and legally. For example, in fall quarter 2005, more than two thousand Think Locally – Act Neighborly educational doorknockers were distributed in neighborhoods near campus, weekly ads were placed in the campus newspaper, and the campus and community media ran articles about underage drinking and loud party enforcement. The Coalition supports the work of the Bellingham Police Department, WWU Police Department, and the Washington State Liquor Control Board with supplemental funding for patrols that require overtime hours. |
