Depression or "the Blues"?
The Blues
Almost everyone gets the blues from time to time, a period of several days to a week in which you seem to be in a funk. These blues usually go away, but they are troublesome.
Depression
Depression is a persistent medical problem, but one that can be treated. It may improve eventually, but left untreated, it can persist for many months or longer. Depression not only affects you mentally and emotionally but also can have a physical impact on your body.
Do I Have the Blues or Depression?
The Blues:
Feeling down for a few days, but able to participate normally in daily activities; occasional lack of energy; a mild change in sleeping patterns; a passing feeling of hopelessness.
Depression:
Persistent lack of energy; ongoing sadness; irritability and mood swings; overeating or loss of appetite; insomnia or sleeping too much; recurring sense of hopelessness.
If you have the Blues, try these things:
- Spend time with other people.
- Engage in regular, moderate exercise to lift your mood.
- Share your feelings. Talk to a friend or family member. They can offer you support, guidance, and a different perspective.
- Don’t take on too much at one time. Set goals you can accomplish.
If you have Depression, get help:
- If your symptoms of depression last for more than two weeks, see a health care provider or counselor.
