Required: viewing movies: Streel Angel, Spring in a Small Town, Thurderstorm, Yellow Earth, Ju Dou, Qiu Ju, Raise of Red Lantern, To Live, etc.

Optional textbook: Chinese National Cinema by Zhang, Yingjin. London/New York: Routlege Curzon. 2004

Objectives:

  • to learn the history of Chinese film
  • to learn Chinese culture, tradition, customs
  • to learn colloqual and formal Chinese expressions
  • to study Chinese plays and film language

Requirments:

  • The class is conducted in Chinese;
  • Students must finish viewing the assigned film before class;
  • Students are expected to actively participate in class discussions

Grading:

  • Assignments (30%)
  • Midterm exam (25%)
  • Final exam (25%)
  • Class participation (20%)
