  • NACCL-18: The Eighteenth North America Conference on Chinese Linguistics will be hosted by the Chinese Program and the Linguistics Program WWU on June 23-25, 2006. Detailed information about the conference may be found at the conference website (http://www.wwu.edu/naccl18) or by contacting the conference chair Janet Xing at Janet.Xing@wwu.edu.

  • SCHOLARSHIP (2003) Recipients of the Chinese Book Scholarship this year are Susanna Yoon for Chinese 301, Amanda Norenberg and Hilary Koslicki for Chinese 201.
  • STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM (2003) WWU in Kunming, Yunnan Province China:  Because of the SARS situation in China, we have cancelled the study abroad program for the 2003 summer and fall programs.  Students who were planning to participate will join other programs in the United States. Susanna Yoon will use her Freeman Asia Study Abroad Scholarship of  $5000 for a course of study at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea.  Her programs includes Chinese Language study. 
  • STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM (2002) WWU in Kunming, Yunnan Province China:  This year Professor Ning Yu (English Department) served as the resident director of our summer program at Yunnan University.  Six students (Christian Bell, Allison Belgarde, Sabrina Hursh, Juliann Itter, Renee Junper, and Yukiko Nakayama) enrolled in the summer program: Sabrina, Juliann and Yukiko remained for the fall program. Allison Belgarde and Juliann Itter were recipients of Freeman Scholarships of $5000 for their study abroad program in Kunming.  Congratulations on this achievement! Sabrina Hursh participated in one of Yunnan Province's  major dance competitions in August and won a third-place award.
  • SCHOLARSHIP AND STUDY ABROAD (2002) Leann Luong was awarded a CET scholarship for study in Viet Nam during Winter and Spring quarters.  She completed courses in language, history and culture in Ho Chi Minh City.  After returning to the United States, she attended a conference in Washington D.C. for student ambassadors of the CET programs.
  • SCHOLARSHIP (2002) Recipients of the Chinese Book Scholarship this year are Kevin Marshall for Chinese 301 and Arlene Chan for Chinese 201.   Congratulations to these award winners.
  • SCHOLARSHIP (2001) Brad Huggins and Rodd Purcell have received William H. Bryant Memorial Scholarship ($500 each) from the International Programs and Exchanges, WWU, to study Chinese at Kunming, China. Three students, Rory Henneck, Megan Carlisle and Mindy Westfall, have received the Chinese Book Scholarship ($150 each) from the Chinese Language Program, WWU. Congratulations to all of you? The Chinese Book scholarship fund was donated to the Chinese Program by one of our former students, Mr. Steven Holt, who is currently working for Microsoft.  Many thanks to Steven!
  • STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM (2001) In the summer, seven students (Robert Arnold, Zachary Hays, Rory Henneck, Brad Huggins, Rodd Purcell, Rachael Rogers, and Edgar Mason) participated in our first session of WWU in Kunming, China. Four of them have continued their study in the fall. All seven students indicated that they enjoyed the program tremendously and had learned a great deal of the Chinese language and culture while they were in China.
  • SCHOLARSHIP (2000) Leann Luong, a Third-Year Chinese language student, received a prestigious scholarship (Freeman Scholarship) of $10,000 from The School for International Training, Vermont, to study Chinese language and culture in China for 15 weeks (Feburary-June 2000). She is one of only five college students in the United States to receive the scholarship this year. Congratulations!
  • CHINESE LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP (2000)  Three of our Chinese language students have received the Chinese Language Scholarship from our program funds in the Western Foundation. The recipients are Jennifer Agibinik, Zackary Hays ( Second-Year Chinese students) and Leann Luong (Third-Year Chinese student.) Congratulations to all of you!! The scholarship fund was donated to the Chinese Program by one of our former students, Mr. Steven Holt, who is currently working for Microsoft.  Many thanks to Steven!
