WWU Men’s Rugby Team to Play in National Championship Tournament in Austin April 27-28

BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University’s Men’s Rugby Club won the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference (NCRC) Championship Saturday, April 13 at Magnuson Park in Seattle, sending the team into the national championship tournament's Sweet 16.
The Vikings defeated Eastern Washington University, the NCRC’s East Division champions, 38-14. The team has a perfect 8-0 record and have outscored their opponents 447-72 this season. The NCRC is made up of teams from Western, The University of Washington, the University of Oregon, Western Oregon University, Eastern Washington University, Washington State University, Boise State University and the University of Idaho.
The Vikings are now looking toward The Sweet 16 of USA Rugby Collegiate Division I-AA National Playoffs NCRC April 27- 28 in Austin, Texas, where they will play either Chico State, Cal State Long Beach or an at-large team not yet announced.
“The players have exceeded all expectations this season,” said Paul Horne, Western's director of rugby. “Reaching the Sweet 16 is very exciting and the team is deserving and worthy of qualifying for this national tournament.”
The team is now trying to figure out how to raise funds for the trip to Texas, estimating that it could cost around $18,000 to attend; donations can be made at www.wwurugby.org/donate.
