We at Western Washington University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders are excited to co-sponsor with ASHA and WSLHA and offer a one day workshop presented on March 3rd, 2012, from 9:00-4:00 by Patricia Dowden, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, ATP. This workshop offers .55 ASHA CEUs; 5.5 OSPI clock hours are provided.

Serving Non-speakers in Medical Settings: AAC in Medical Settings: Quick strategies with and without technology |
Description:
This is a one-day workshop focused on serving non-speaking adults, teens, and youth in intensive and acute care medical settings. The focus will be on individuals who have lost communication abilities due to traumatic brain injury, strokes, cancer or degenerative disease. We’ll begin with oral strategies but quickly move to aided communication, with and without technology. The course will cover new mobile technologies and the use of ordinary laptops & tablets for communication as well as the changing role of the Speech-Language Pathologist with AAC in medical settings.

Western Washington University – Building/Room AIC-West 210.

Directions: Take the Western Washington University Exit off of Interstate 5, Exit 252. Follow the Western Washington University direction signs to Bill McDonald Parkway. At the intersection (Taco Time, Wendy’s, and Union 76 Station) turn left onto Bill McDonald Parkway (West). From Bill McDonald Parkway continue up and around Sehome hill and take a right past Buchanan Towers onto South College Drive. Parking will be available for free in either lot 12A or the C - lots (these are both gravel lots). From the parking lots continue to the Academic Instruction - West (#50 on the parking map, https://www.ps.wwu.edu/parking/map/index.aspx).
You will be free to explore dining options in Bellingham for lunch from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. when the afternoon session begins.
