About SSH SSH is a full secure replacement for FTP and Telnet, as well as the UNIX r-series of commands. It provides for automatic and secure authentication of both ends of connection. The SSH application allows you to have multiple terminal windows and file transfers going through one secure and authenticated connection. SFTP is an application used to transfer files over TCP/IP using the Secure File Transfer Protocol. Note: SFTP is NOT FTP over a secure connection. From a user perspective, they may behave the same, however these two protocols are completely different - you cannot connect to a regular FTP server using SFTP. The host you want to connect to must be running an SSH server with a properly configured sftp-server, and can safely shut down insecure FTP access. |
