Office of Institutional Research (OIR)

Institutional research responsibilities at Western are divided among three different offices: the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing (OIAT), the Office of Institutional Research (OIR), and the Office of Survey Research (OSR).

Western’s Office of Institutional Research (OIR) supports institutional planning, policy formulation and decision making through the development and dissemination of accurate and timely data, reports, and analysis. The OIR is committed to providing support and expertise for the evaluation and support of assessment activities and data and analysis to administrative and academic departments to inform and assist institutional decision-making and planning throughout the university. The OIR provides analysis and reporting on student characteristics and academic performance, retention and persistence, accountability, classroom utilization, access issues, program evaluation, and support for Western's student data warehouse. Also the OIR produces extensive quarterly reporting on student enrollment, credit hour production, and FTE faculty.

The goals of the OIR are to:

  • 1) Provide, improve, and enhance information-related services to the university;
  • 2) Assist university administrators in assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of the university by providing support for assessment, planning, policy level decision making, and other committees or departments in their planning and evaluation activities; and
  • 3) Assist in the establishment of a program to improve the quality and timely submission of external reports especially to Washington’s Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) and legislative committees, and Washington’s Office of Financial Management (OFM).
To achieve these goals and carry out its mission, the OIR conducts a wide range of institutional research to support and foster efficient campus planning and administration, provide analytical and informational services, create models and develop analytical tools to integrate the campus' various planning efforts, provide leadership and guidance in assuring the quality, accuracy, and commonality of campus data by working with campus office and department personnel, and report and disseminate a consistent set of data to members of the campus community and to the public in accordance with established procedures and in response to special requests from campus offices and departments.
