Letter from the Chair:

Dear Alumni,

It is always exciting to have a newsletter going out, with this chance to greet you all and give you some updates on the Comm Department.  In this issue, we have news of faculty, staff, students, and your fellow alumni.  I also like to take this opportunity to offer special thanks to each alum who has stayed in contact to let us know how life is going.  Additional appreciation goes out to those who have supported the department over the years.  Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to offer scholarships, purchase equipment and materials, and contribute to the professional development of Communication students, staff, and faculty.

This year has witnessed happy and sad times for Communication.  Our deepest sympathy has gone out to Karen and JB Stout and family who lost their daughter Abi in a tragic accident this January.  Abi brought a sparkle to Communication events and activities, and we all miss her very much.  Her lovely memorial service was a time that we reconnected with a number of alumni who came to help celebrate Abi’s life.  The department initiated the Abigail Tandy Mae Memorial Scholarship to honor Abi’s bright, lively intellect.  We know that this scholarship will be awarded to a deserving Comm student, and the Stout family will help us develop specific criteria over the next few months.

Our department has also experienced good times since I last wrote a “letter from the Chair”.  Our tenure track faculty members have been accomplishing wonderful work in their teaching and scholarship, and articles inside this newsletter will provide details about these exciting achievements.   We have hired three new full-time faculty members, and we hope you will join us in welcoming Dr. Ee Lin Lee and Dr. Tara Perry, who began tenure track positions in September, 2005, and Rae Lin Schwartz, who will start next fall.

Keep those emails and notes coming so that we can hear more about all of you!  When you are thriving, it helps us remember the importance of our Communication work.

Sincerely,

Anna Eblen
