Make A Difference Day

Red Square Info Fair
September 24-25, 2012

Join the Center for Service-Learning at the kickoff event of the year! With music, games, food, and prizes, you are sure to have an incredible welcome to the school year.


Viking Launch Service Projects
September 22, 2012

Before fall quarter began, 77 freshmen participated in Viking Launch, Western's early fall start program. On Saturday the 22nd, they participated in 6 service projects with community organizations around Whatcom County.



Earth Week Kick-Off Work Party
April 14, 2012

Western students started off the week leading up to Earth Day with a work party helping with garden space preparations the Center for Local-Self Reliance, a local non-profit teaching others how to grow and preserve their own food.

Five work parties, various times & locations

Help Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA), the Whatcom Conservation District, and Whatcom Land Trust to plant hundreds of native trees and shrubs along the banks of Landingstrip Creek in Acme from 9am-noon. FREE t-shirts will be available and REI will be raffling off a tent to one lucky volunteer! Carpool options may be available. Other Earth Day opportunities:

*The Center for Local Self Reliance needs volunteers for a massive Earth Day work party. Volunteers will be cleaning up the gardens, working on the Caretaker's House Center, and many other diverse projects--truly something for everyone! Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves.

*Bellingham Parks and Recreation has three work parties in honor of Earth Day! Volunteer from 10am-noon at Franklin Park, Squalicum Creek Park, or Memorial Park in removing invasive species and spreading mulch to help with restoration work. Gloves, tools, & direction are provided.

*Join the Washington Conservation Corps to work on a section of trail on the popular Oyster Dome Trail in the beautiful Chuckanuts from 10am-3pm. Tools, instructions, and fun will all be provided, and volunteers are invited for a post-work party BBQ on the beautiful Samish Overlook!
