Nominations Process for Academic Year 2007-08

The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, in collaboration with the Center for Service-Learning (CSL) and the Center for Instructional Innovation, is soliciting nominations from the campus community, especially Directors, Department Chairs and College Deans for faculty to participate in a Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program.

We are seeking faculty interested in integrating academic service-learning pedagogy into a new or existing course during the 2007-08 academic year. Pending funding, selected faculty will work with Service-Learning Faculty Fellow Dr. Angela Harwood from Woodring College of Education and CSL staff throughout the 2007-08 academic year. Faculty Fellows will explore academic service-learning theories and effective implementation and assessment strategies. Fellows will work together to share ideas, revise syllabi, develop community partners and design community-based learning projects that meet course learning objectives.

The first deadline for nominations is June 8, 2007. Contact Timothy Costello, CSL Service-Learning Campus Director at 650-6515 or Timothy.Costello@wwu.edu. You may nominate up to three faculty from each program or department or up to seven faculty from each college.

Goals
  • To develop interdisciplinary collegiality among faculty interested in service-learning, community based learning and civic engagement in higher education.
  • To form partnerships and supportive networks to engage in service-learning pedagogy and scholarship during the 2007-08 academic year.
  • To share experiences and course accomplishments and challenges with other WWU faculty through presentations and/or mentoring during the 2007-08 academic year.
Benefits
  • Small course development stipend (funding pending).
  • CSL course support (materials including service-learning faculty manual, student course coordinator assistance, best practice information and models, recent research, etc.).
  • Center for Instructional Innovation technological course development support.
  • Priority for travel funds toward relevant service-learning, community-based learning and participatory action research conferences, workshop or other event.
  • Recognition for work including certificate of completion, support letters for and assistance with addressing service-learning in Tenure, Promotion and Review portfolios, and highlighted work at campus events.
  • An opportunity to work with and learn from faculty across disciplines.
  • Excellent professional development.
