HIGHLIGHTS

Message from the Dean

Dear Friends of the College,

We are pleased to welcome you to Highlights 2007, the College of Sciences and Technology newsletter.  This is our first electronic newsletter and we hope you will enjoy being connected to the College in this way.  We hope to be able to communicate to you some of the energy of our College and expose you to the wide variety of new and exciting activities in which our students, faculty, and staff are involved.

The College of Sciences and Technology (CST) has been in existence for a little over four years, and in that short time we have come a long way.  New academic programs have been established, new faculty and staff have been hired, and our students have distinguished themselves in the classroom and in national and international-level competitions.  Furthermore, we have introduced community outreach programs that are making a difference in Western’s commitment to bringing the excitement and importance of what we do to the general public.

Many do not realize that our students compete not only in athletics, but also in academics.  In this edition of Highlights we tell you about the success of our engineering technology submarine team during their competitions in California.  We will also tell you about computer science student, Brian Thomas’ participation in the prestigious, Microsoft sponsored, Imagine Cup competition in Korea.

We realize it is increasingly more important to educate and inform the public in matters of science, mathematics and technology, and to perhaps interest young people in pursuing careers in these vitally needed areas.  Thus, we have introduced our Wizards @ Western program, for community kids and their parents, and our Science and the univerCity series for our Bellingham, and beyond, friends.

We have had a very busy and productive year here at CST and there is so much more to tell you about the activities of our students, faculty and staff.  The students at Western are from many areas and come to us with a wide variety of interests and points of view, as well as a wonderful energy and a passion for learning.  Our faculty and staff bring us a level of dedication, skill and creativity that allows us to excel.  We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter and that you will be inspired by what is happening at Western and in CST.

Cordially,

Arlan Norman, Dean
